Have you taken the MSF beginning course, if so the skills taught there are usually what you will need to pass the drving part of the test. In some states passing the course waivers the riding part of the state test and is a great way to go. IMHO the class is well worth taking regardless if it waiver the test.
Re the owners manual. If you have a Clymer or factory manual. The first chapters cover all the owners manual information and has lots more information than the owners manual. Clymers are about $30, and factory about 60 US$. Money well spent.
